Good article, Google is the internet in many people’s eyes. At Microstat were striving to improve are google ranking/ WSO as it the first port of call for potential customers.

When I worked at Pets.com at the call center, many people would call up and say “I want to go to your website but it doesn’t exist.” I would say “Just type http://www.pets.com into the address bar. People would say “I just did that but it takes me to AOL” (It was invariably AOL users who didn’t understand what was going on.)

Turns out they were just typing http://www.pets.com into the AOL search bar. They called that the Address Bar.

Later, I wrote a script for everybody to ask “Are you using AOL?” And it would assume people who answered ‘yes’ didn’t know a browser from a CD tray.

Very insighful article.
No wonder one sees yahoo/aol/microsoft as the significantly searched keywords in Google.

G did replaced the address bar, but it’s interesting to know the monetary idea behind it!
