Dell makes $2 million from Twitter

How much money have you made from Twitter? With most companies yet to even figure out how to get more than 100 followers Dell has made over $2 million from a number of Twitter accounts.

The main account is DellOutlet with 625,378 followers but they have a number of other accounts too. For a global company like Dell that’s a good idea – most people should just stick with one account.

We got 100,000 visitors from Twitter this week

This week has been a fun week for one of our internal project Twitition with over 100,000 unique visitors from Twitter in a couple of days and links from pretty much every major newspaper.

A lot of people think that because Twitter is still quite small a campaign won’t generate as much buzz as doing something on Facebook. What they forget is that the media loves Twitter and any Twitter campaign stands a much higher chance of getting a write up than a Facebook app.

This added PR opportunity is what makes campaigns doubly successful.

    Thanks for such terrific content.

Obviously I need to pay more attention to this blog since I often struggle to get links into my websites.

    Cheers,

It’s great what Dell did, they must have some good PR people out there, but how do you know they make $2 million from Twitter ?

I think it’s like saying Dell made $2 mn from their ‘telephone lines’ or ‘news papers’. It’s just a method to announce discounts, new offers etc. It’s a communication tool at best.

One day businesses will realize that everyone is fed up with being bombarded with targeted advertising intruding in their lives. The future is to be where consumers look when they’re ready to buy.

Interesting to see that they have “made money” from it. But of course it is entirely impossible for them to prove this is “additional” money. ie the people who follow will be interested in Dell already, and they would have found the deals elsewhere.

I think this is my general criticism of Twitter, if I want to buy a Dell PC, I’d want to go to the Dell website. But might I have missed a “twitter only” deal. So now I have to check Twitter and Dell. Thus making life harder. So now I have to subscribe to all the companies I might buy from and check the feeds continuously in the hope they send out a deal. I’d rather just go to the company’s website as and when I need to. If I want to follow their news, then I’d look for their RSS feed.
