The Blogstorm newsletter isn't the same content you get on the site

A few people seem to have misunderstood the Blogstorm Newsletter – it isn’t the same content that’s published on the blog.

The newsletter goes out a few times per month (we’ve only sent one so far) and focusses on techniques that for some reason I don’t want to reveal on the blog. The last newsletter was excellent according to the feedback I got so the next one needs to be even better.

To sign up you need to fill in the form on the top right of the website (see image below).

I was quite impressed with the first newsletter, so I’m looking forward to what you bring out for the next one ;)

I noticed you also send a signup request through to Aweber automatically when someone subscribes to comments – that is a bit naughty.

Yeah the 1st was excellent. keep ‘em rolling ;)

Partick, maybe you should think of re-organizing them so people/visitors would know the difference. I would suggest you not to place them next to each other!

Design an icon “Weekly SEO Newsletter” with ‘Sign Up!’ on it and place the box below this image. Would attract lot of signups, at least help people differentiate what’s RSS by E-Mail and SEO Newsletter.

Regular visitors are comfortable with present layout but think about potential new visitors, whom you want to sign up! Use Google Optimizer to test the results of success :)

I’m sure this should increase the Newsletter subscriber base & also having an RSS icon bigger than one now might get visitors attraction.

    My recommendations – http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2007/11/02/rss-best-design-practices-and-icons/ & http://www.designbliss.com/2007/09/27/over-25-different-styles-of-rss-icons/

Choose the one you like and something that looks unique :)! Best Wishes!

Andy I use a plugin to send those, they should only ever get sent once and never to people who already subscribe.

Naughty but since I’m giving all this information away for free and not using the list for other things I think (hope) I’m justified. :-)

Vinay you are 100% right I know the layout isn’t very good for getting newsletter subscribers. Need to work on that.

There are alternate variations of the plugin that provide an additional tick box, or thank people for their first comment and ask if they might like a bonus download for joining the newsletter.

Sending them straight to Aweber is possibly breaking the Aweber ToS (though some parts are in the FAQ or a little vague) as I didn’t specifically enter an email into a box to receive a newsletter.

I know the method you use is used by some sites under different circumstances, as an example managing a membership mailing list, or customer list after a purchase.
At that stage there is a different level of expectation from a user, there is a business relationship.

LOL…. that for some reason I don’t want to reveal. So not a particular reason?

I like the newsletter as well. ;)

  • http://www.blogstorm.co.uk Patrick Altoft

The reason is different depending on the particular thing I’m writing about. Maybe it’s a dodgy technique or something that I’m not 100% sure about.

I signed up after the first newsletter went out. Any chance you could send me the first one please ?

  • Ed

Same question here as Joe has, any chance having access to the first newsletter Patrick?
    Cheers!

  • http://Juanlanteri.com J.P.

Yep, same question here. Can I get the first issue?

  • Ed

Hi Patrick, was it possible to have access to the first newsletter?
    I would really appreciate it.

    Thanks!
