Dreamed up on a Sunday morning over eggs and marmite soldiers, Twitition is now officially the most successful campaign of all time on Twitter.
Initially a bit of fun, we have become the first site ever to get 10,000 re-tweets of a single link (in just 3 days) and the site has been mentioned in dozens of major UK and US newspapers. Over 75,000 users have signed petitions using the service and we’ve attracted 50,000 followers to our twitition Twitter account as a result.
The Background
The marketing world is buzzing with talk about Twitter and yet very few people really understand how to actually carry out a Twitter marketing campaign.
We decided to use our experience to come up with a neat idea which we could take to brands & agencies as a case study to demonstrate the potential of Twitter as a marketing tool – Twitition was born.
The concept is quite simple – users can create and sign petitions using Twitter. The key is that several viral elements combine to ensure that petitions are shared as much as possible.
The Campaign
We always knew that the site would take off when a particular event sparked the web into action and that opportunity presented itself recently with the announcement that iPhone 3G owners wouldn’t be given an easy upgrade to the iPhone 3G S.
Two petitions were started within hours of each other and both very quickly gained traction in both the press and on Twitter.
Over the course of the first 3 days Twitition attracted over 130,000 visitors and the Twitition user account on Twitter shot up from almost zero to over 25,000 followers.
The PR
We didn’t contact any news sites about Twitition because we wanted to see how far natural buzz could take us. In the event we managed to get links & mentions in the following major news sites, which contributed considerably to the success of the campaign.
