The region’s digital professionals and creative enthusiasts gathered in Millennium Square on Friday, waiting for the winning design of the Leeds Digital Festival 2011 branding competition to appear on the big screen.

With two of Branded3’s talented designers – Andrew Machin and Max Shearer – in separate finalist teams, we couldn’t wait to find out whether one of them had collaborated a design which would feature across the region’s biggest digital event later in the year.

And we certainly weren’t disappointed when moments later – Andrew’s team’s 3D pixel design sprung up across the screen, confirming their interactive festival identity had won the month-long public vote.

The search for the perfect brand design for Leeds Digital Festival 2011 began back in April, when talented designers from across the region were invited to a Design Day at the Round Foundry Media Centre.

Professionals and enthusiasts alike were split into five teams, each of which had to create a new identity for this year’s festival. After presentations, three teams were chosen as finalists, including Andrew’s team’s 3D pixel approach, and Max’s team’s digital take on a regional motif.

These three teams then had to face a public vote to decide which design would represent the 2011 Festival, and along with Digital Creative Director Gaz Battersby, and Graphic Design graduate Hannah Backhouse; Andrew’s team’s ambitious yet innovative idea was the people’s choice.

Their interactive idea encourages public interaction and involvement, and has the scope to spread the influence of the festival’s message further than ever before.

Now in its fourth year, Leeds Digital Festival will take place throughout November, and if the standard of this year’s branding competition is anything to go by, it looks set to put Leeds at the heart of the digital map.
