News comes today that Ofcom is concerned that useful public content might not be given good rankings in the search results.
Ofcom has been looking into the issue and are worried that commercial content will rise to the top at the expense of high quality non-commercial content.
An “arms race” is likely to continue between those search engine providers keen to meet the full range of needs of their users, and those who place the greatest commercial value on the traffic generated by search. Typically, the latter group does not include the providers of public service content.
Ofcom has nothing to worry about in this case – search engines reward links and there is nothing that attracts quality citations better than public service content from public organisations such as the Police, Tax office or anywhere else.
The only thing that might hold them back is bad on-site optimisation.
