Why Sainsburys search visibility is down 35% this week

Supermarkets are having a pretty rough time at the moment and Sainsburys in particular is not having the best of weeks (don’t mention Nectar points or Brighton) so I noticed with interest the searchmetrics.com chart below this morning.

The reason for the drop is nothing to do with an penalty or any problems – Sainsburys have taken the decision to close their non-food website and stop selling lots of items online and as Google has seen the pages disappear, they have removed the site from the rankings.

What is remarkable is the size of the drop – Sainsburys were doing so well with SEO that they have dropped from a visibility of 66,197 to 43,207 (a loss of 35%) – to put things in perspective the drop this week is around 4 times the size of the entire visibility of well known appliance retailer AO.com. It makes you wonder why Sainsburys didn’t just do a deal with somebody to run that part of the website for them.
