Following on from my basic SEO for forums post I wanted to discuss how
to market forums in more detail.
The key aspect of forums is that they have a lot of pages and struggle
to attract many natural links. Older, more established forums, will
have Google trust and a good level of natural links making it much
harder for new forums to compete. If you want your forum to rank well
in Google you need to start thinking outside the box.
Linkbaiting for forums is a very hard process, how many times have you
seen a forum on the front page of Digg? The easiest way to build links
is to forget about the forum and start a blog. Install the blog on the
same domain as your forum and blog about the same general topics on
the forum and deeplink to some interesting threads.
Any links to the blog will help the overall TrustRank of the domain
and you will see your forum threads start to rank higher and higher in
the search results as you build more links.
The key point is to remember to link generously from the blog to the
forum in order for the PageRank to pass from one section of the site
to the other.
